When students reach Year 2 (Grade 1) they are introduced to Character Dance.

Character Dance is the theatrical presentation of national and folk dance. This style is still used in traditional ballets such as Swan Lake, Coppélia, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. Young dancers study the traditional steps, posture, and port de bras (movement of the arms) from different countries.

The Curriculum

Character work teaches musicality, rhythm and mime, often working with a prop such as a watering can, a garland or a headdress. The character dance music used in the RAD syllabus is orchestrated and uses traditional instruments from the country they are studying.

Character Dance represents about a third of the syllabus. The children use character skirts and shoes and spend the last 15 minutes studying the dance style allotted to their grade in preparation for a solo performance in their exam.

Social & Technical Development

The partner work involved in character dance enables dancers to interact with each other developing trust and confidence, as well as a sense of working together for mutual benefit. It builds confidence in dancers and prepares them for partner work aiding their transition to pas de deux later on.

When considering whether or not a young dancer is ready to commence pointe work, it is essential that we consider each dancer individually. We must be confident that a child is ready both physically and mentally.

Physical Readiness

Growth spurts between ages 11-14 affect balance, coordination, and strength. Dancers must have sufficient strength in their core and legs to sustain classical ballet technique; the shoe is only there to assist.

Mental Readiness

Dancers must be prepared to dedicate time by attending class twice a week. They must understand the deep commitment and focus required for safe pointe work.

Timeline & Requirements

Prerequisite
Extra Masters classes starting from Year 5.
Target Age
Decisions are typically made during Year 7 or Year 8.
First Term
Focus on tying shoes and basic movements (approx. 15 mins per class).

We ask that you respect our professional decision and do not encourage early progression before a child is truly ready.

Fitting & Purchases

Once the decision is made, you must book a professional fitting. Shoes must never be bought without being fitted.

Top Choice
Freed of London (Covent Garden) - Ideal for first pairs to encourage proper use of feet.
Alternative
Dance Evolution (Kidlington) - A convenient and reliable option.

Inform the fitter it is a first pair; since they will only work at the barre, they can have slightly more room.

Important Safety Rules

Check Before Sewing: Please let us check the shoes before you sew anything. Once sewn, shoes cannot be returned if the fit is incorrect.

Home Practice: It is imperative that dancers do not dance in their shoes at home. They must only be worn in class under our guidance. However, practicing tying the ribbons is encouraged at home.

Baby and Pre-School Ballet

In a fun, nurturing environment, we encourage children to develop their skills through movement that promotes self-expression, confidence, and freedom of movement.

Basic ballet technique is subtly woven into each class, with activities designed to be explorative and engaging—disguising training within fun, creative movement. Following the principles of the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, including its “freedom before form” approach, children build strong foundations in ballet in a natural and age-appropriate way.

As they grow, students develop coordination, musicality, communication skills, and the fine motor control essential for ballet—all while gaining confidence and a genuine love of dance.

Adult Dance Classes

We run various adult classes for a range of abilities. Whether you are looking for a traditional ballet setting or physical conditioning, our classes cater to both general and ability-specific needs.

General Adult Ballet

A traditional ballet setting including a gentle warmup, barre work, and finishing with centre work. Suitable for those with basic knowledge of ballet.

General/Improvers Ballet

Includes some slightly more complex choreography. Suitable for those who have been attending classes for a few years (either as an adult or child).

Ballet Conditioning

Focuses on conditioning exercises that target strength in the upper back, core, legs, and ankles to improve balance, deportment, and flexibility. No previous ballet experience is necessary. Please bring a yoga/pilates mat to this class.

Adult Tap

(Unfortunately, no classes running at present) Following traditional American tap style, this class challenges the brain-to-muscle connection and helps maximize brain function through regular aerobic training.

The Foundation of Dance

Ballet is the foundation of most dance forms and is therefore the foundation of our school. In our classes, we like to develop a child’s musicality and artistry whilst implementing a secure technique.

"Classical ballet is an art-form that requires discipline, dedication and resilience which are important characteristics in many walks of life, not just ballet."
